Anyone can put hundreds of books on a single CD. (Isn't technology wonderful?) But we're interested in providing not just large quantities of books at ridiculously low prices, but also providing a "context". The selection matters. Putting the right books together in ways that make them easily accessible can create a unique context that makes it possible to better understand a region of the world, an historical period, or an author. That's our goal.

The B&R Samizdat Express is a small book publishing company, founded in 1974 . Since July 1993, we have been doing business on the Internet, mainly selling public domain texts in electronic form (classic works of literature and government documents). In 2001 we began selling such texts in collections on CDs and DVDs. In 2010 we added an online store for selling such books by download, as "portable" ebooks that work on Kindle, Sony, Barnes & Noble, and other reading devices www.samizdat.com/store

Our Web site www.samizdat.com, started in May 1995, attracts a broad audience of book lovers, Internet novices, people interested in the prospects of business on the Internet, educators, and the blind.

The company is run by Richard and Barbara Seltzer. Richard is an independent Internet writer, speaker and consultant. He worked for Digital Equipment (now Compaq) for 19 years, where was the Internet Evangelist in the Internet Business Unit. He was one of the handful of people who helped Digital to recognize and take advantage of new business opportunities on the Internet as the first major company to use the World Wide Web for marketing . He helped customers rethink their business models. His book "The AltaVista Search Revolution" was published by Osborne McGraw-Hill; his "Shop Online the Lazy Way" was published by Macmillan; and his "Web Business Boot Camp" was published by Wiley. He has also published novels, children's stories, plays, and short stories.

Barbara has experience in marketing, in use of the Internet, and in early childhood education.

When the rapid, automatic 10 Mbyte installation is done, you will be able to open ReadPlease by clicking on an icon on your desktop. Controls in the right column allow you to change the speed of the voice (with a sliding bar), change the font size (with a sliding bar), and switch among four different voices (with the right and left arrows.

When you run ReadPlease, you see the text, with yellow highlighting moving from one word to the next, while you hear that same text. And you can at any time edit the text in the video window. Just position your cursor, click you mouse, and tuype whatever you like -- for instance, annotation or marks to show where you last stopped reading. Then save the edited file on your hard drive.
