This CD with 172 books, includes "Authors and Friends" by Annie Fields and "Yesterdays with Authors" by her husband, the publisher James Fields, as well as works by the authors discussed in those books. That means the works of: Longfellow, Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Harriet Beecher Stowe, Whittier, Tennyson, Thackeray, Hawthorne, Dickens, Wordsworth, Miss Mitford, and Barry Cornwall.
Intended for use with PCs (Windows or Linux) and recent Macs (OS X), our books are in plain-text format, not audio or video. You read them on your computer screen.
From the preface written for this edition by Mark Schorr:
"Annie Fields (1834-1915) was at the center of New England literary life after the Civil War. From her privileged perch as the wife of James Fields, the publisher of America's leading poets, as the biographer of Harriet Beecher Stowe, nineteenth century America's best selling author, and as the friend and companion of Sarah Orne Jewett, Annie Fields seems to have been destined for fame. However, her literary reputation, like that of Zora Neale Hurston, has lagged somewhat behind the quality of her work. ... today Annie Fields' work has been often out of print except in expensive editions.
"Now that B&R Samizdat Express has put a low-cost edition of Fields' Lives of Writers within the reach of every student of literature, many will rediscover Fields' biographies as well as the poets. Fields will then have the full citizenship in the critical pantheon that she richly deserves.
"Were Fields alive today, she would make a marvelous narrator of the American experience. The voice that we hear as we read her work reminds us of a time when great critics were also great friends, and when the best tour guides through our literature were the authors themselves."
-- Mark Schorr teaches American Literature at Cambridge College, and serves as Executive Director of the Robert Frost Foundation. He is the author of the core Wikipedia article on Annie Adams Fields at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Adams_Fields
