Vintage Atlantic Monthly -- 100 issues 1857-1867, plus books by its first five editors

This CD contains 100 issues of the Atlantic Monthly from 1857 to 1867, plus 81 books by the magazine's first five editors (James Russell Lowell, James Thomas Fields, William Dean Howells, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, and Horace Elisha Scudder).

Old magazines can give a sense of how events and literature were perceived when they were fresh and new, without the reinterpretation of later years. The experience can be like viewing a now famous painting when the paint had not yet dried and the colors were bright, before familiarity and layer after layer of interpretation and judgment had covered it over with dulling preservatives.

Its creators were a group of writers that included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., and James Russell Lowell (who would become its first editor)."
